Arrive early enough to see the vehicle before it has been warmed up. Start outside: inspect panel gaps, paint variation, lamps, windshield condition, underbody scrapes, and evidence of fluid leaks. A family SUV can have honest parking marks, but fresh paintwork, mismatched fasteners, uneven tire wear, or a wet area under the engine bay deserve a clear explanation and, where appropriate, an independent inspection.
Tires are a useful ownership record in physical form. Check that all four match in size and type, read the date code, look for shoulder or inner-edge wear, and compare tread depth across the axle. Uneven wear can point to alignment, suspension, or prior-impact questions; four tired tires can turn an apparently fair price into an immediate expense. Confirm the spare, jack, locking-wheel key, and basic cargo-area equipment as well.
